In accordance with 201 KAR 46:081, the LXMO license is for individuals that perform limited diagnostic radiography under the direct or indirect supervision of a licensed practitioner of the healing arts. There are three (3) separate categories of LXMO licenses: medical, podiatry-only, and bone densitometry-only.
In order to become licensed by KBMIRT as a LXMO, an individual must first complete an educational program approved by the Board. LXMO Board Approved Program List.pdf
Following completion of a Board-approved program, an individual must next pass the Kentucky Limited Scope Exam for each of the categories in which they have been educated. The Kentucky Limited Scope Exam is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ("ARRT"); however, this exam is for state licensing purposes only and is not the same as taking an exam for ARRT certification and registration.
Finally, after completing Board-approved education and passing the Kentucky Limited Scope Exam, an individual may apply for a LXMO license.
Please note: In accordance with KRS 311B.090 (1), “No person shall engage or attempt to engage in the operation of radiation-producing equipment or the administration of ionizing radiation for the purpose of medical imaging or radiation therapy in Kentucky unless licensed in accordance with the provisions of this chapter."
