Kentucky Radiation License for Medical Imaging

KRS Chapter 311B requires those practicing in certain medical imaging professions to hold a license with KBMIRT; those practicing in radiography, nuclear medicine, and advanced imaging professions (such as registered radiologist assistants and nuclear medicine advanced associates) and other professions including mammography, computed tomography, bone densitometry, cardiac interventional radiography, and vascular interventional radiography.  KBMIRT does not currently license individuals that practice magnetic resonance imaging or sonography.

In accordance with 201 KAR 46:040, eligibility includes the completion of an accredited educational program and passing the national examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).  The educational program must be accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies recognized by the ARRT and approved by the Board, pursuant to 201 KAR 46:030.

Applications are available through the KBMIRT Application Portal.

Temporary Kentucky Radiation License: Medical Imaging

An individual that has completed an accredited educational program, but has yet to achieve certification, may apply for a Temporary License, in accordance with 201 KAR 46:045.  The active Temporary License authorizes the individual to practice within their full scope of practice for which they are licensed for a period of up to one year while the individual is awaiting successful passing of the national certification exam.  The Temporary License cannot be renewed or extended.  Upon active certification, the Temporary License may be converted to a permanent license prior to expiration.

Applications are available through the KBMIRT Application Portal.

Temporary Kentucky Radiation License: Student Radiography

Recently, regulations were amended to include provisions for the Temporary Student Radiography License.  An individual that is actively enrolled and in good academic standing in an accredited radiography program, has completed at least 50% of the program, has been endorsed by the Program Director, and has established appropriate supervision at each health care facility where the individual intends to practice, is eligible to apply for the license.

The scope of practice for the Temporary Student Radiography Licensee is limited, in accordance with 201 KAR 46:045, Section 4.  An individual that holds an active Temporary Student Radiography License may perform static x-rays under the supervision of a licensed Radiographer that is immediately available and physically present within the department.  Further, the Temporary Student Radiography Licensee shall not perform bedside radiography, as defined by 201 KAR 46:010 (5), shall not perform fluoroscopy procedures, and shall not submit x-ray images for interpretation unless approved by a licensed Radiographer.

An individual who holds a Temporary Student Radiography License shall remain actively enrolled and in good standing with the educational program throughout the duration of his or her licensure. If a licensee fails to maintain continuous enrollment, is suspended, dismissed, or withdraws from the educational program, the licensee shall notify the board immediately.

Upon completion of the accredited educational program, the Temporary Student Radiography Licensee is eligible to then apply for a Temporary Radiography License.

The application is not yet available through the online portal, therefore a paper application should be completed and submitted to the office: Temporary Student Radiography License Application & Instructions.
